Mounting Front License Plate Bracket DIY
(No Drilling Technique)

Unfortunately I live in a state that requires a front license plate. So I came up with this idea to obey the state laws, maintain an OEM look, and most importantly so I don't have to drill into my front bumper! Using technique by mounting the bracket to the car with 3M Super Strength molding tape has worked well for my other cars for years without any issues.

Parts

  • 3M Super Strength Molding Tape
Purchased Through: Local Auto Parts Store

Tools Required

  • Adhesive Tar and Wax remover
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Philips Screw Driver (to screw on your license plate to the bracket)

Installation

Install Time: (less than 10 minutes.)

Before you begin:
  • Clean your front bumper of any wax or residue.
  • Make sure the surface is above 65 degrees.

IMPORTANT: Note that I'm just sharing how I mounted my front license plate bracket to my car. There's always a chance that the front bracket can fall off with this method. Screwing the bracket into your bumper is the safest method. Do this at your own risk.

Installation

ALTERNATE METHOD: If you do not want or do not have the OEM bracket, you can always use the same method and affix your license plate directly to the bumper. Simply bend your plate slightly so it curves with the bumper and tape it on. You can also tape on a license plate frame to complete the look.

Step 1. Apply 3M Super Strength Molding Tape

Clean the back edge perimeter of the bracket with adhesive tar and wax remover as well as rubbing alcohol. With the back of the license plate bracket facing you, apply 3M Super Strength Molding Tape all around the perimeter except on the bottom as that part will not touch the bumper. Careful not to go over the outer edge of the bracket otherwise it will show when installed.

Step 2. Clean bumper then install bracket

Clean your bumper where the 3M tape will be applied using adhesive tar and wax remover. Then use some rubbing alcohol/water mix over the surface. This will give the 3M tape a clean surface to stick to.

Visually look under the top portion of the bumper to see the two slots where the plate bracket will hook into. Make note of it's location so you can hook the bracket in place.

Peel back the red backing on the 3M tape.

To install, start by hooking the bracket to the bottom of the bumper then you will tilt it up and press firmly so the 3M tape sticks to the bumper. Examine all around to make sure you got a good bond and hold it firmly for a few seconds and press all around. Use a little heat from a hair dryer if it's cold outside and let the tape seat properly.

That's it, done. No one will notice the tape unless they are looking at it really close.
